What the client wanted
The owner had quite a wide strip of land to the side of their house and wanted to obtain planning permission for a new house for one of his children. The more challenging part of the brief was that it had to be the biggest house possible for the space. This was going to be a challenge for our designers.

Our creative solution
During pre-application discussions with the planning department of the local authority, they made it clear that they would not allow a 3-storey house in this location. So our creative planners decided to first obtain planning permission for a style of house that would be permitted, which was granted. With this in place, we subsequently submitted a second planning application for an additional third floor, which we are very happy to say, was also approved! This was an example of clever planning at its best.
Our favourite features
As the plot was quite narrow, our architects worked hard to keep as much usable space as possible, which was achieved by making the entire ground floor open-plan. This gave the home a spacious and contemporary feel. We also made great use of the roof space by fitting a small, unsuited bathroom within the area – essential for a growing family. Our client was amazed at how much we managed to fit into the relatively small area of land.
